Assignments before the first class

First and foremost, I have not done any Visual Art works in high school and therefore all my drawing skills are self-taught and self-trained!

The brain is associated with intelligence, thinking, emotions and memory.  In the picture, the lobe-like structures represent the human brain cortex which is in charge of these functions. I restricted myself to utilize around 10 minutes to think as much as I could to compose this drawing.  According to our characters, experience, perceptions, interests, memory and emotions, we can come up with a lot of things, even within a short time. My drawing is composed of a lot of things like human head, umbrella, zebra, lollipop and butterfly wing which are what I “saw” on my mind within the 10 minutes. The wing in the picture is belonged to a bird, flying in the sky with freedom. Imagination and creativity are like the sky, which is unlimited and have no boundary.  Thinking is an organized and complicated step-by-step process. The gears together with the accessories around show that the human brain is like a machine.

Ashton Raggatt McDougal (ARM) Architects

The building located in the center of Melbourne’s art precincts in Melbourne, Victoria, has won several prizes, including the AIA (Vic Chapter) Victorian Architecture Medal, William Wardell Award for Public Architecture and Joseph Reed Award for Urban Design.

The enclosure of white diagonal grids around the black grids has created an overlapping of lines, adding dynamics to the architecture. The fluorescent tubes, especially at night, catch the glimpse of the pedestrians.  Given this distinctive feature, the theatre can be clearly identified among the neighboring buildings and has become an icon in the area.  In my point of view, this modern and fresh architecture has added more colours to the area, making the cosmopolitan more vibrant and energetic, since Melbourne is a city where historical architectures dominate. I wish I can visit Melbourne one day and take a look on this splendid masterpiece!

It is a photograph I took a year ago in Stanley, a very famous beach and tourist attraction in Hong Kong.  In my photo, however, the major icon is not the beach but the old houses in that area. The photo features an old stone house with a mail box which can only be found in old masonries. It is originally a plain and ordinary mail box, yet through the nearby houses, plants, facilities and the sky, a blend of different colours are reflected on it and add more spices to it. Thanks to the influences of the visual environment, a simple object has transformed into a noteworthy icon. I think it is important that we pay attention to our surroundings.  Although, in the first glimpse an ordinary object is trivial, it will become extraordinary if we explore more and thoroughly to the things all around.
